Below we have provided instructions about how to register for classes at The Academy of Music.
Student Recitals
The Academy sponsors over 20 performance opportunities in this series during the year at various venues. Family, friends and the community are invited to attend. Levels range from first year students to those with years of experience playing advanced repertoire on their instruments. This series provides an excellent venue for perfecting performance skills before a supportive and attentive audience. Although admission is free to the public, audience members are asked to bring non-perishable food items which the Academy donates to Manna Food of Rockville for distribution to the needy.
Master Class Series
A "public lesson," master classes provide an excellent learning experience for individual students and audience members. The Academy has presented classes with visiting artists including flutist Bart Feller of New York, English cellist Robert Cohen, and Hartt School of Music violin professor and recording artist Katie Lansdale. The 2005-2006 school year will include visits by renowned pianists Brian Ganz (Peabody Conservatory) and James Giles (Northwestern University) and acclaimed violinist Amy Beth Horman.
Faculty in Concert
The Academy faculty consists of outstanding teachers with impressive performance credentials. With international competition winners, recording artists, even a Grammy® Award winner, the faculty brings real world performance experience to Academy students. Faculty members can be heard frequently throughout the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area and on the Academy's Lyceum Concert Series at the Sandy Spring Museum, now in its seventh successful year.
Competitions and Music Festivals
The Academy's students have distinguished themselves on numerous occasions in recitals and festivals, and in solo, concerto and chamber music competitions. Students are encouraged to participate in off-campus events and recitals as often as possible. Academy students and graduates have received scholarship awards to universities and major summer music festivals.
Honors Competition and Concert
Once per year, the Academy sponsors a school-wide competition for all instrumentalists and singers. The competition is judged exclusively by outside judges who choose the most prepared and musically communicative students for a special public performance.
Other Performance Opportunities
Different programs offer different opportunities. The Suzuki Programs typically perform in recital (solo and group) in off-campus venues several times per year. The Academy’s String Chamber Orchestra has produced CD recordings and also performs frequently throughout the year. In-class performances are an outstanding feature of the Academy' Harmony Road Keyboard Program, giving students ample experience and opportunity to build their confidence. Individual private teachers may also offer Performance Classes and Student Recitals.
